Each year, my employer picks a charity to support through fund-raising activities. For next year, it is asking staff to vote on which charity they would prefer. I have no idea which one to pick - and while I will think about it some more myself, I also wondered how my friends would vote.

They are all good causes. I ticked Alzheimer's Society because my understanding is that Alzheimer's research is underfunded at the moment compared to, for example, cancer research. I may have just picked up this factoid from their literature though!!

Charities which support adults can find themselves underfunded in comparison to those which support children- hence my vote for Alzheimers.

All good causes but another vote for Alzheimers because children's and war veterans' charities get periodic boosts from topical events whereas my impression is that it is far more difficult to raise awareness and funds for research into senile dementia.

It's a horrid thing, and the NHS, as Sir Pterry points out, is not often fit for purpose w/r/t Alzheimer's.

Nonetheless, I cannot but choose Help for Heroes. Comment would be superfluous.

We have the same system at JOLF and by a good coincidence, our 2009/2010 charity is the Alzheimer's Society. The target is to raise £1million I believe.

I think that's the one I voted for from a vaguely similar choice of three.

As regards your choice, well they're all good causes deserving of people's dosh. I'd probably vote for HfH, but there wouldn't be much in it.

Only one choice for me (despite liking Pterry's books and being aware of the horror of Alzheimers and the effect on the sufferers and their families).

That's a really tricky choice. I can't decide which one, my nan had Alzheimers, my husband is RN, and Childline is so important.

Reluctantly, I've voted for the Alzheimer's society.

My reason is this - I don't like giving to charities which (even in part) do things which I, the tax payer, have already paid for (and if I haven't, put my taxes up, please).

So I'd have liked to see some political/campaigning charities (which AS is, in part who point this out), and some charities which do things outside of the 'really, any decent human being would be paying for this' - including, but not limited to, literacy for women in developing countries, drugs for people when NICE points out that they aren't cost-effective, and support for everything else which is good (from art to zoological breeding programmes) but which we-as-a-whole can't agree to fund to the level which we-as-a-sensitive-and-intelligent-decent-human-being would like.

My vote goes to the Alzheimer's Society, because a) it's something that scares me rigid, and b) even speaking as an acquaintance of many rabid Pterry fans, I don't think it's nearly as well known as the other two.
