I wonder why the dates are considered necessary in question one. Is it to avoid confusion with the city he was born in on 5th September 1983?

Given that my Tolkien knowledge has got sadly rusty over the last 16 years, I am amazed at how many I can answer. Amazed not in a "Wow! I'm clever!" way, but in a "Er, aren't these questions a bit easy?"

I didn't get 4 and 16, and hadn't thought of the answer to 12 before [livejournal.com profile] adaese said it.

I think the "nervous" point is an important one - being in that interrogation-like setting must be a bit different from doing it from the comfort of an armchair.

I probably shouldn't admit it but I liked The Hobbit best. It had a nicely structured story and telling it from the point of view of Bilbo, who wasn't a particularly heroic character made it seem much more real. With Lord of the Rings I always felt there was a great 350 page novel in there somewhere.

I agree with Lady_of_Astolat that they are actually very easy for the most part, unless you're very nervous, 16 I wouldn't have got though.

Actually, we thought the questions were pretty hard. 4, 6 and 16 in particular.

Well, I did get 16, though I wasn't entirely sure. 4 I always forget (it comes up occasionally in quizzes). But 6 is the only one I genuinely don't know.

2, 3, 4 and 16 were beyond me, though I felt I should have known 2.

Have you looked up the answer for 6 now? I didn't think it was all that obscure, and would guess that you would at least recognise the name ...

It's not that obscure, I just have shocking gaps in knowledge of the most basic things from the Hobbit and LotR. Now random professors of Anglo-Saxon are another story :-)

Mastermind (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/b006mk1s) (The Tolkien bit starts at 5.05 minutes)

I got 11 right!

I managed about five, and I'm a lightweight, as Tolkien enthusiasts go.

(I was more pleased with getting 9 on "Lord's cricket ground" the previous week, though).

Same here, got 4 wrong (thought it was Elaine Griffiths), and had a block at 16, which I should really know very well. Hazarded a guess at 6 which turned out to be right.
