There's a book here, you know. You could gather all these stories together and compare them against the biographical evidence. "Chapter One: The Lord of the Rings was not written in Bloemfontein." "Chapter Six: Was Tolkien ever at home, given that he evidently moved from pub to hotel to pub?"

According to Scull and Hammond, Tolkien did actually stay in my local pub in 1945 when the Inklings had a short break to celebrate the end of the war. Apparently, he and Warnie Lewis went for a walk in the surrounding countryside and returned via my front gate, something I was very excited to discover, though of course I wasn't living here then, nor was I even born come to that!
