I've catalogued approx 4000, which are the main fiction and my cookery books. Still to go: anthologies and non-fiction. So 6000 sounds about right.

That sounds a reasonable way of estimating. I used to have all our Tolkien, other fantasy, and sf in separate catalogues, but I haven't been keeping them up to date.

So far, I have 502 on Libraything, and Pellinor has 389, but there are whole uncharted tracts of shelf that neither of us have got to yet (and there's also a small amount of overlap, since we both claim Diana Wynne Jones and certain children's books.) So who knows? Coincidentally, earlier this evening, I surveyed our shelves, and said "that's a ridiculously large amount of books." "Not as many as lots of other people have," Pellinor reassured me. So it's nice to have proof. :-)

We used to measure it in 'shelf space' - there's about 150 feet of shelves in the study - say 10 books to the foot...

Though adding in all the other rooms, and the garage and storage facility 4500 begins to look conservative...

And I do know where most of them are (managed to lay my hands on 1066 And All That very easily).

Very rough estimate 2,200. That's not including RPG books.

I'm intrigued as to where these people with many times more books than we have put them all. We have a relatively big house with two rooms dedicated as libraries (one for the books, one for the RPGs). I doubt we could accommodate 10,000 without looking at loft conversions or extensions.

Very much a guestimate. There are over 2,000 listed on LibraryThing, but they don't include all the SF collection or all the detective collection or all the reference books. On the other hand, they include graphic novels.

I have included the books in boxes in Big Yellow.

What's more, every now and then we get rid of lots of fiction we're not going to read again.

(Absolutely no idea whatever the criteria, and have no intention of wading into the garage and kids' rooms and understairs cupboard and not sure at what point a thick pamphlet becomes a thin book. MUST be in 4 figures though, although the number of MY books currently out and in stages of being read (or ready to read imminently) is more like 20.

What about ebooks? What about libraries of ebooks that I am subscribed to...?
