I heartily recommend "Vinland", by George Mackay Brown. It is a very long time since I read anything so moving. If you have any interest in historical, Scottish, or even fantasy fiction, I urge you to read it.

Also picked up a pTerry again - "Soul Music". Worth a third read.

On non-fiction, wondering if we can justify a newer, bigger world atlas than our 14 year old one.

Oh well - back to the grindstone.

I've got a massive Times Atlas of the World that I only paid £6 for. (They are something like £200 new.) The downside is that it was published in 1966, but I'm willing to deal with that...

Your mileage may vary. ;)

Well, geography (at least the political kind) has changed quite a bit in the last ten years or so - that might be a good excuse.

It's the kind of thing that sometimes gets reduced in August/September for Back to School, so it might be worth looking out then.

Ah - good idea. Thanks.

Well, considering that a number of countries have changed/appeared/disappeared in 14 years, isn't that reason enough?

Also, considering how much you recently spent on a different kind of book, I'm thinking 30 quid for a new decent atlas might not be so bad? ;)

www.thebookpeople.co.uk can be a good source of this type of thing, although you'll need to check monthly for a few months before something comes along.

How about a CD-ROM atlas though?

The cost point is valid - but an atlas takes *much* more room up.

CD_ROM, hmm, still prefer proper books with pages. Did see one in Ottakars with a CD-ROM inside, which might be the best bet.
