"Seven custody cases heard in Kirkwall Sheriff Court

It proved to be a busy weekend for Orkney's police force - with seven people appearing from custody at Kirkwall Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

With Monday a court holiday, it meant that people detained at the weekend had to spend one more day than normal behind bars.

Surprisingly, it was not the first time that seven custodies have taken place in Orkney in one day - with the same number heard in June, last year.

Tuesday's incidents, one of which was heard in private, included a number of breaches of the peace."

When we went to Shetland in 2003, they were still talking about how hot it had been earlier that year - into the 20s some days. They seem to have an unofficial, but widespread, arrangement of businesses shutting up when it's warm and sunny, so people can go and sunbathe.
