My avast! anti virus software is reporting infection by Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk] in multiple files. What should I do???

ETA: I *think* I've fixed the infection ...

Hope you've managed to get the problem fixed. In my experience getting rid of malware problems is like hunting a moth with a shotgun in a dark room full of grandmothers. You'll probably get it in the end but there'll be a certain amount of blood on the floor and some of your friends might not be emailing you for a while.
