I used my Olympus E-420 and Sigma 50-500mm lens at a focal length of 500mm, f/6.3, ISO 100, 1/80 second. I also had it mounted on my Manfrotto tripod. The key bits were a delay of 12 seconds between pressing the shutter and it taking the shot (to avoid camera shake), and exposure compensation of -4EV to get some detail - when I let the camera choose the settings, it just gave a featureless white disc. I'm rather proud of myself for figuring out how to do it :-)
I suspect the thing that would most improve the shot would be a better tripod - I don't think my currrent one is quite up to the beast of a lens I was using. I won't be able to test this theory on this full moon, but maybe for a future one ...
