"At Oxford, Tolkien was a top student in many subjects."

Um, no. No, he wasn't. From all I have read - which is quite a bit - Tolkien was not a "top student".

"To celebrate this moment, Uncle John and I took Pythius to Humblebee Wood, which lies about two miles from Winchcombe. This wood was walked by Tolkien just before he wrote Lord of the Rings, which intrigued me."

Winchcombe itself is putting about the latter story on its official website. I'll ask my Mum about it next time I talk to her. We did once almost get a cat from a nephew of Tolkien's who lived a few miles from Winchcombe in another direction, though...

Might the true story be that the cat had walked through the wood?

My Mum - who knows pretty much everything there is to be known about local history - hadn't heard the story before, and the several people she asked about hadn't heard it, either. She suspects it's someone being fanciful, but will ask around some more.
