Yesterday afternoon was rather incredibly frustrating, due chiefly to being locked in a car park, and having to make our way back home by foot*, bus, a long wait at Temple Meads and train. But it did have one consolation - a name-check on Test Match Special :-) I sent them an email just before we left the house, got in the car, turned the radio on, tuned to 198 metres, and almost the first words they mentioned were my name!

*Despite my twisted ankle.

So what was the cricket email then? :-)

"Jon, Simon

I have always understood Beamer to be a corruption of Beaner, ie a ball aimed at the bean or head.

Best wishes

It was a contribution to their lunchtime session on the meaning and origin of cricketing jargon, and they had just said that they didn't know where Beamer came from.

And cricket is full of interesting words. Even the name of the game itself. Did it start when one shepherd tossed a stone to another, who then hit it with his crook ... or "crooked it"?
