You know, the return from Loughborough and your link with Jackson, Howe, and Lee poses a question. What is your opinion of the Jackson adaptations? I enjoyed them enormously for their entertainment value, for Shore's score, for some moments that should have been in the books and were not or that were moved and enhanced to great effect (e.g., Theoden's where are the horse and the rider? Gandalf and Frodo in Moria, etc.), the overall production design, the horses, the attention to detail, the wondrous use of Lee and Howe, and so many other things. Admittedly, I'm sure that one reason they resonated so strongly with me is that I think Jackson, et al did wonderfully capture the theme of going forward, in spite of the odds and regardless of the cost because it is the right thing to do -- which was very powerful to me in the 9/11 environment. There were other aspects of the adaptation I disliked intensely (Faramir, Frodo) and others I sort of shrugged over (increasing Arwen's role). Where do you and Adaese come out on them? I realize this may warrant a long, long post at some point, but I am curious.

Might do justice to the reply in a couple of days' time, but for now the short version is very pretty (with you on Lee & Howe; admired their work long before they were picked for the films), but I didn't like some of the changes they'd made to the storyline. Particular gripe about Faramir & Denethor, in that they'd used ideas JRRT toyed with while in the early drafts, and rejected. That seems to me much more offensive than merely inventing your own bits.

The short version: I liked the first film despite its changes from the book. I didn't like the second film, partly because of the changes from the book. I've only seen the third film once.
