And then we went to West Cork
Oct. 2nd, 2012 07:26 pmThis was the view from our hotel.

The Irish seem to like bright shop-fronts.

This is a black guillemot. Yes, honestly.

This was the view from Bantry House.

This plaque was outside Bantry House. I'd like to find out more about it.

We think this is an emperor moth caterpillar. It was huge!

We seem to have stepped into a Kay Woolard painting.

The view from further up the same hill.

Charles Fort, Kinsale.

In the ‘Emergency’…
Date: 2012-10-03 03:06 pm (UTC)236 Sqn, Coastal Command, were in 1941 based Cheriton Carew, tasked with convoy escort, reconnaissance, and long range fighter duties. Flight V5728 crashed due to engine failure over Irish waters returning from a convoy protection mission on 23 October 1941. Sgt Douglas Albert Woodman RCAF died of his injuries; F/Sgt C S Brady RCAF was interned, subsequently repatriated, and was killed in action 24 September 1944; Sgt P O Webster RCAF escaped from internment and rejoined 236 Sqn, was promoted Pilot Officer, and was killed in action on 24 July 1942. I have seen a suggestion that Sgt Brady was awarded the DFC, but cannot find the record.
