That looks like a really good trip. It's hard to have a favourite - I do love the Duchess of Rutland's window - but then I really like that second picture of the lock, and the 7th one, of the wooden roof arches, and... and so on!

I love the lock! :) and the baptismal font (?) with winged creatures - and the brockwork! - and the rafters - and the battlements and the origami bird and the quiet waterway and the tongue-and-groove (is it?) ceiling and the man who gazes mildly and unafraid at death and the insects and the glorious sunshine. And you all look wonderful! :)
Thank you for sharing your holiday!

Thank you for some very interesting pictures, I very much enjoyed looking at them (and reading the captions ;-D).

I think the wedding was at the White Hart Hotel in Lincoln, where the AGM was held in ?2004.

It would be very nice if you & adaese could show us around your patch of Lincolnshire some time and tell us more about those last few photos. (Goodness knows when though... .)

Was there any special reason that the fifth Duchess of Rutland was honoured with a window? Was it that she was the only local duchess who hadn't got one already, and they felt sorry for her, or did the Manners family lean on the village to put it up? I looked on the internet and I can't see that she's especially known for good works or anything.

The fifth Duke was very deeply in love with his wife, and did a lot with / for her; they rebuilt Belvoir Castle together; rebuilt it again when it burnt down; and finally, he built the mausoleum for her (http://www.antiquaprintgallery.com/leics-mausoleum-belvoir-castle-antique-print-c1840-37406-p.asp). I wouldn't be surprised if he had made it known that some token of appreciation from his tenants would be appreciated.

And yet, she also seems to have been loved by many other people. Her funeral procession was huge, with what seems like everyone from miles around taking part; and so I also wouldn't be surprised if the local tenantry had done this off their own bat.

That's a lovely story - and I have since read an obit from the Gentleman's magazine (http://onelondonone.blogspot.com.au/2010/11/death-of-elizabeth-5th-duchess-of.html) which shows why she might have been so well thought of by the tenants and villagers.
But was the window put up by those who actually knew or remembered her? It looks modern - i.e twentieth century. (Speaking from ignorance of course.)

It is early(ish) 19th century. (I'll read the obit when I get home - both my work internet access and my phone are being a bit awkward ATM).
