What makes me sad is that it takes someone like Sir David to say som ething that really should be blindingly obvious before the powers that be will take notice! Of course nature reserves and SSSIs aren't enough - the value of habitats and ecosystems comes from their connectivity and sustainability, animals and plants need gene flow and routes through and around landscapes, so we as a society have to facilitate that. A 10-acre woodland isn't just a smaller version of a 100-acre woodland; it won't have the same diversity and richness of birds, insects, plants, etc. - and ten 10-acre woodlands are rarely a substitute for one continuous big 100-acre one.
