Then there was Derbyshire, where there are clearly some very strange people ...

Nothing strange about that- Battle of Shrewsbury and Harry Hotspur (aka Sir henry Percy) who was killed at the battle fighting for the wrong side had connections to the area.

I'm a historian- we know these things! :o)

I've also visited Battle Field on the edge of Shrewsbury which has a very fine memorial church built by Henry IV to atone for the dead of both sides.

The Percy family had lands in many of the northern counties including Derbyshire. Not sure about the exact connections here.
