We found a copy of Humphrey Carpenter's "JRR Tolkien: A Biography" in an Oxfam bookshop this morning ... with a postcard from Carpenter to one of the Inklings, Robert Havard!

Indeed! I wasn't going to bother looking inside the book, but adaese did, chiefly to see how much was being asked for it.

Rather better than the copy of David Day's Guide to Tolkien I found in the Tesco in Perivale. I will donate that to Tolkien to the world.

However - we did find Rikki's first edition LOTRs.

Does the World need a(nother) copy of David Day?

Glad you found the 1st LotR, though.

As well as being an Inkling, Havard was doctor to Tolkien and to CS Lewis, and to their families. Apparently he was nicknamed "U.Q.", short for "Useless Quack", by the Inklings.

Well done!

I also see a comment from LiveJournal saying that "Your entry got to top-25 of the most popular entries in LiveJournal!" Does this make you an Internet celebrity?
