I had been racking my brains, especially after the clue of "fairly well-known literary character". Not a single one of these did I get,and the only suspicions I had (that No. 3 was written somewhere around 1890-1910, and that No. 6 might possibly be Mole in Badger's house - but I couldn't make it fit with my recollection of the story) were absolutely wrong.
I'm crushed!
