Scotland: part three

I left my write-up of Scottish holiday at the end of the first week; so, belatedly, to the second.
On the Saturday morning, we packed up and left our flat in Skaill House, and headed a few miles north to Marwick, where we walked up to the Kitchener monument and the new HMS Hampshire memorial wall. There were also some surprisingly cute rabbits, and lots of birds.

And then onto Skipi Geo, where we saw lots of arctic terns :-)

On Sunday, we headed to the south-eastern corner of Mainland; where we saw defences both old (Castle Howe, ?Iron age and Viking) and new (Graemeshall Battery, WWII). You can probably work out which this photograph is of.

On Monday, we got a ferry to Rousay, for the digs at Skaill and Swandro, the broch and cairn at MidHowe, and the gardens at Trumland. However, today's photo is not of any of those, but of the view from our B&B. Rousay is the island on the left.

On Tuesday afternoon, we had a tour of HMS Tern, a WWII airfield on the west mainland of Orkney. It is slowly emerging from the long grass, and the ops room is being developed into a small museum. Then in the evening, we went on a tour of Skara Brae, which was also great fun -we got to go down into the passageway between the houses, which has been closed to the public for the last fifteen years or so. One photo from each.
