The good

It's the weekend. This means more time spent with Creatrix, (small) lie ins, more time doing things I want to do like reading, and less time spent worrying about work.

Talking about reading - I have a new edition of works by Saki. This is a nice book in itself, and has prompted me to re-read them, which is always worth doing.

We went over to Woburn yesterday. Suits sorted out, new china bought, pleasant wander round town. We'll gloss over the lunch.

The loft is very slowly getting sorted out after being decorated. (There's still a lot to do, though!)

I opened my new bottle of Highland Park 18 year old yesterday :-)

I've just had a cup of tea. Proper tea (single estate Assam).

[livejournal.com profile] emily_shore posted a link to this, which amused me.

And [livejournal.com profile] niterobin posted a link to this, which also amused me.

The next Temeraire book will soon be out:

And so will the new Al Stewart CD, according to [livejournal.com profile] alstewartfans. (Looking further ahead, he will be touring Britain next spring).

We've had a wonderful holiday on Orkney (which I still need to blog about).

And in August, we're going to Norway.

All of which adds up to Yay!, Squee! and W00t!

Oooh new Saki! Any previously unpublished stories in it?

No, unfortunately. It is a nice hardback edition, though, with 40-odd of the best of his short stories, and the novella "When William Came".

That novella is one of the most disturbing things I've read for a long time. I suspect that it is worryingly accurate. Also, I can't help but wonder what it would be like if e were in that situation.

I'd describe Yeovil himself as one of the few genuinely sympathetic caracters Saki ever wrote.

I'd agree with all of that (although there is less scope in short-short stories for developing sympathetic characters).

The trick is not to let the bad things outweigh the good things. I'm still working on it, but if I figure it out, I'll let you in on the secret. I'm glad you have some good stuff in amongst the rest of it all.

As you say. And if I find the secret first, I'll share it with you :-)

Dear me. Don't you know that proper tea is theft?

Yum, 18 yo Highland Park. Very possibly my favourite whisky (well, not counting 1979 Port Ellen).

Friends' good things are always a pleasure to read, and I hope you will post more about Orkney.

As an outlander, I would like to know why proper tea is theft.
