I mostly use my filters for reading - though I've very occasionally posted to a TS filter, or one for people I know personally.
For reading, I separate out people I know, from other personal journals that I read for fanfic or other fandom stuff, and from communities.
That way if I don't have time to read everything I can keep up with the people who are likely to care that I'm reading, and catch up on the communities later.
