I have a few set up but rarely use them as I don't like the way Lj's filters work for reading.
I've occasionally used them for posting when I want to essentially use LJ as a substitute for email.
Although in general I agree with clarienne: don't put it on the internet if you want it private, I find I often have a class of post that is not really private, but that I don't particularly want appearing in Google either, and a basic friendslock suffices for those.
The way search engines handle blogging engines is to highly prioritise novelty, so generally, if these posts did later become public it wouldn't be a problem . Of course I could just exclude bots from the journal entirely, but I don't particularly want to do that either as I find it handy to be able to search my own posts sometimes.
