Date: 2010-02-26 09:25 pm (UTC)A great scholar, and a major authority in my area (Old English Syntax). He was a pupil of Tolkien's, and he spoke at the 1992 conference. His articles and essays are as meaty and witty as you could wish for, certainly not what you'd expect in a "dry" field such as syntax. I had the honour of meeting him once after I first came to Oxford. I owe an awful lot to him.
